Overlooking the town of San Ignacio is an ancient Maya City called Cahal Pech, the Place of Ticks. It was called this name because before the archaeologists arrived to do some serious excavations in the area it was being used as a pasture for cattle and there were so many ticks in the area that its name was easy to come by.

All about the Xunantunich and Cahal Pech Archaeology Mix.

Cahal Pech is a small city whose history started as far back as 1200BCE. It collapsed as a centrally managed city by 850AD but new finds suggest that people came back to do some infrastructural work on the site.

At Xunantunich, one of the most majestic pieces of art work called a frieze was built. Once wrapped around the entire building, we have lost the North and the South sides of the frieze and more than half of the West frieze.  Fortunately the East frieze and a part of the West frieze are still evident of this most spectacular art that was built at 800AD. This piece of art is a testament of their mythology, politics and religion that dominated the psyche of their world.

Guest can decide which ancient city they want to visit first. Lunch can be a late lunch or in between sites.
