Belize Botanic Gardens

The hearth at Lucas Medina’s Botanical Garden

Scientists have suggested that all the medicine in the world today has come from 1% of the forests around the world. This is mind-blowing and full of hope for the future of medicine on our planet. Now we have to learn how to care for it with a little bit more affection.

Throughout space and time, humanity has recognized our direct connection to the forests of the world. We have tried desperately to shake ourselves off this connectedness but more and more we are realizing that it is futile and the price is too high for us to pay. Cultures throughout the world go to the forest for many things they need for survival. From food to fuel and from medicine to spirituality.

In e Belize many villages still have their traditional forests and their traditional healers who have an incredible relationship with the trees, vines and plants in the forest. From bug repellants to spiritual healing herbs; from spices to food coloration; from cough syrups to diabetic tea, all from the forest with someone rich with knowledge that the world should celebrate still participates in the lives of millions throughout the world today.

Yellow Ginger Root

There is always a fire crackling in the gardens of these healers. There is always so much work to do in these gardens – from clearing what is considered weed to organizing the growth processes of may plants. From yellow ginger to “jackass bitters”; periwinkle to “piss a bed”; and from snake plant to sour sop and tree of life. The cure for some disease or some ailment can be found in the forest and we want to take you to meet the people who still believe in the forest for all health issues. Its a great educational treat. We highly recommend it!

Its time to come to Belize!
